What Fsh measures

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a hormone made by the pituitary gland at the base of the brain, and it drives the ovaries and testes. It is present in people of all sexes. In women, FSH helps ovarian follicles mature and its level varies across the menstrual cycle, then rises after menopause as ovarian activity declines. In men, FSH supports sperm production in the testes.

Because FSH is a signaling hormone, it is usually interpreted alongside LH and the relevant sex hormones, such as estradiol or testosterone, rather than on its own. Where a menstrual cycle is present, the timing of the blood draw matters a great deal, since expected values differ by cycle phase. A clinician can place a single reading in the context of your age, symptoms, and overall hormone picture.

What a high Fsh can mean

What a high FSH result can suggest depends on context, and it is not a diagnosis on its own. A raised FSH often means the ovaries or testes are less responsive, so the pituitary signals harder to try to stimulate them.
