What Mchc measures

MCHC (mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration) is the average concentration of hemoglobin inside your red blood cells, describing how densely each cell is packed with the oxygen-carrying protein. It is one of the red-cell indices reported on a complete blood count (CBC), and it is typically calculated from your hemoglobin and hematocrit rather than measured directly.

Clinicians use these indices as a group to characterize patterns of anemia and to guide which further tests, such as iron studies or a blood film, might be helpful.

What a high Mchc can mean

A high MCHC is uncommon, because there is a practical upper limit to how much hemoglobin a red blood cell can hold. When it does appear, it often points toward conditions in which red cells are more spherical and compact rather than the usual disc shape.

Because a genuinely high result is unusual, it is often flagged for review and checked against the blood film and the other red-cell indices. Your clinician interprets any elevated MCHC in the context of your full CBC, symptoms, and history rather than treating it in isolation.

What a low Mchc can mean

A low MCHC, sometimes described as hypochromia, means your red blood cells carry relatively less hemoglobin and therefore appear paler than usual. It is more common than a high value and frequently accompanies red cells that are also smaller than normal.

A low MCHC is most meaningful when read alongside MCV, MCH, hemoglobin, and iron studies, which together help distinguish the underlying cause. Interpretation and any next steps should be discussed with a clinician who can consider your overall picture.
