What Lipoprotein A measures
Lipoprotein(a), usually written Lp(a), is a cholesterol-carrying particle much like LDL but with an extra protein attached to it. That structural difference is what sets it apart from ordinary LDL cholesterol on a standard lipid panel.
Blood levels of Lp(a) are largely determined by the genes you inherit, and they tend to stay fairly stable across your life rather than drifting much with day-to-day habits. For that reason it is usually measured just once, as a way of understanding an inherited cardiovascular risk factor, rather than something tracked again and again over time.
